FemmeCloths is owned by Natalie Pohjolainen. She is a crunchy homeschooling momma, married to a retired veteran, and loves all things natural, crafty and fibre related. She makes her own bath and body products, cooks (mostly) from scratch, and always has a ball of yarn and knitting needles in her purse.
She grew up in Nova Scotia outside of Halifax, and by the time she was 25, had lived in every Atlantic province. She relocated to the Ottawa Valley in 2004 where she met her husband of 16 years, and they married barely 5 months after their first date. Their miracle daughter was born 5 years later.
They moved around southern Ontario a fair bit before the army took them to Shilo Manitoba, which is where FemmeCloths was born, and then upon retirement, they moved to the Thunder Bay area on the shores of Lake Superior. They are currently planning their dream house build, a small sustainable home where they can grow their own food, relax in nature, and continue to home educate. Of course, the plans will include a sewing studio so FemmeCloths can expand, and possibly even become a large family business!

Housewife Blows Income Tax, Starts Business!
Late in 2013, a friend had given me a couple cloth pads to try and while my first thought was “Ick”, I did promise to try them. I was amazed at the comfort and found they were super easy to care for, just throwing them in the wash. I was going to ask her to make me more, but being a little impulsive when it comes to all things creative, I decided to dust off my 20 year old sewing machine and make my own. I raced to the local fabric store and blew a significant portion of our income tax return buying fabrics! I was delighted so many gorgeous prints were half price!
I started by cutting pattern templates out from paper, making them up into shapes I thought I’d like. Some worked, some didn’t. I’m sure a few of my friends got tired of hearing “Hey, are you bleeding soon? I have a new pad for you to try….” So after some trial and error for the shape, I found one that worked, the single flared end in light, moderate and heavy which is still in the shop and within a week I had a beautiful pile of several dozen pads (if not a hundred +) and was super pleased with myself. My husband looked at the huge pile and innocently asked “Do you need that many pads? I mean, do you bleed that much?” Um……no. No I don’t.
So I thought I would see if there were any people interested on the local shop and swap page, they all sold within a day!
FemmeCloths was born.
From the moment I first posted, I have not stopped creating. I added regular liners, then petite liners and petite (teen) pads, then a front bleed pad in light and moderate, then a classic dual flared ends shape, so now there really is a pad for everyone! I have so many wonderful testimonies of women who have been helped and healed by switching to cloth pads. Running a small business has allowed me to stay home and homeschool our daughter, as well it kept me busy through the many seasons my husband was deployed, and gave me the ability to donate to women in need.
8 years later with more than 7,000 sales, FemmeCloths is a company I am extremely proud of, and excited to build upon in the future.
